Energy Center San Diego Case Study

DATA SUMMARY:

9.8 million gallons - $84,000 - saved in 2021, eliminated use of sulfuric acid, world class control

PROBLEM

Energy Center San Diego provides chilled water for cooling more than 3.2 million square feet of space used by commercial, industrial, hospitality, retail, and government clients in downtown San Diego, California.

The site was relying on traditional chemical water treatment methods including the use of dangerous sulfuric acid to lower the pH. This program can put workers at risk, wastes millions of gallons of water, and bloats budgets.

What’s more, the overall effectiveness of the program  was lacking. There was visible scale on their equipment, which inhibits heat transfer and raises electricity costs. Harsh chemicals caused hazardous leaks in tubing and rusted the metal enclosures used to house the cooling equipment.

It was clear they needed a better way to handle their cooling and heating water treatment, and they found one with Capture H2O.

SOLUTION - Treating Water Without Hard Chemicals

Capture H2O’s High Cycle System is a patented  program that uses dual alternating high efficiency softeners and the natural chemistry of the water to provide world class scale, corrosion and bacteria  control. Coupled with a high level of service and wireless monitoring, the system drastically improves water treatment processes.

CUSTOMER:

Cordia Energy

PROGRAM:

High Cycle

PROJECT SCOPE:

2 cooling tower systems throughout the district cooling plant

DATA SUMMARY:

9.8 million gallons - $84,000 - saved in 2021, eliminated use of sulfuric acid, world class control

SUMMARY

Since 2012 Energy Center San Diego has invested a total of $120,000 in the patented Capture H2O High Cycle System. With high-efficiency softeners installed on the makeup water line to the nine cooling towers the organization was able to raise the cycles of concentration and increase their efficiency.

It’s clear that upgrading their aging and unreliable infrastructure to a modern water treatment system from Capture H2O was the right move for Energy Center San Diego’s process, people, and budget. With millions of gallons of water saved every year, it’s also helped them become a leader in sustainability in San Diego’s business community.
