Westfield Century City Case Study
DATA SUMMARY:
5.5 million gallons saved in 2022, wastewater repurposing, improved control, 23 month payback
OVERVIEW
When Westfield Century City Mall in Los Angeles, California was undergoing a redesign, planners saw an opportunity to change the way the property handled its water needs. The aim was to reduce reliance on potable water in its cooling system, and instead make use of the groundwater located under the property.
Westfield Century City’s leaders wanted a water treatment system that reduced water consumption and operating costs associated with their cooling system, but it also had to be safe, and most important of all, effective. The system in place at the time — one reliant on harsh chemicals to treat the cooling water — wasn’t going to meet those needs. Capture H2O had a solution that would.
OUR SOLUTION
Capture H2O recommended a system that would allow Century City to capture rainwater and utilize groundwater from beneath the property rather than rely on potable water for its cooling system. Then, to eliminate the use of harsh chemical water treatment, Capture H2O’s High Cycle Program was put in place. It uses a patented program coupling high efficiency softeners with the natural chemistry of the water to control scale, corrosion and bacteria using the water’s own chemistry.
The new system maximized control of scale, corrosion and bacteria without exposing workers to harsh, dangerous chemicals. Since implementing the system in 2017, Century City has saved more than 13 million gallons of water to date.

High Cycle
PROJECT SCOPE:
HVAC for Westfield Century City
HVAC system for the century city mall
DATA SUMMARY:
5.5 million gallons saved in 2022, wastewater repurposing, improved control, 23 month payback
SUMMARY
Relying on naturally available water on-site gave Century City a more sustainable, greener water treatment system that is both efficient and effective. Thanks to the success of this initiative, Capture H2O’s systems are planned for more properties in Westfield’s portfolio.
